About
Ms. Rahner
I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degree in childhood education and special education from Adelphi University. I also earned an early childhood education degree from Touro College and an advanced certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Molloy College. This is my 4th year teaching elementary school. In 2015, I traveled to the Midwest to teach 4th grade in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Returning the following year to New York, I was very fortunate to teach 6th grade ELA, at Babylon Grade School, as a full year leave replacement. Last year I taught Kindergarten here at Babylon Elementary School. I am also the junior varsity field hockey and lacrosse coach at Babylon Junior/Senior High School. I love bringing creativity into the classroom and having children use hands on experiences to increase their learning.

Reader's Workshop
Writer's Workshop
What is writer's workshop?
Writer's workshop is where the teacher will provide writing lessons that will guide the students as they make meaning in their illustrations and writing composition. Each unit will address skills that are needed in order for our children to be successful in writing meaningful pieces. Students write on a topic of their own choice while, encouraging them to use the skills we have learned in each lesson. You will be updated on what we will be learning on each unit and also how your child is doing.
Fundations
Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) that helps create supportive, successful learning environments. Second Step’s holistic approach helps create a more empathetic society by providing students with tools to enable them to take an active role in the social-emotional growth.
Science/ Social Studies
Students will learn science and social studies content during this time. We have various themes we follow throughout the year! We also have a science room in our first grade hallway which we use quite often!
Go Math
What is reader's workshop?
During reader's workshop, the teacher will provide reading lessons that guide the students as they make meaning of the books they listen to and books they read on their own. This is the time where students are reading independently and the teacher will conference which each student to assess whether or not the students are using the skills we have learned during the reader's workshop lesson.
Second Step
We will be using the GoMath Program for our math period. The GoMath program is aligned with the common core standards.
